A granite slab quality check should confirm the ordered material, lot appearance, usable dimensions, thickness, finish, flatness, structural condition, repairs, identification and packing. Buyers should inspect each requirement against an approved sample, written specification or drawing instead of assuming that all slabs sold under one commercial granite name will look and perform identically.

Quality means fitness for the order. A uniform black countertop slab, a crystal-rich feature panel and an expressive exotic granite need different appearance limits. Evaluate the actual material against its intended use.

Start with the Granite Purchase Specification

Inspection cannot resolve an order that never defined what was required. Before production or lot allocation, the purchase document should identify the commercial stone name, finish, nominal thickness, minimum usable size, quantity, application, edge or fabrication requirements and packing method.

The appearance section should state whether the project requires close shade control, balanced natural variation or individually selected feature slabs. It should also address mineral concentrations, directional movement, contrasting patches and other visible characteristics that influence layout.

Separate Natural Characteristics from Quality Problems

Avoid vague report terms such as "spot," "line" or "defect." Record the approximate size, location, visible condition and relation to planned cut-outs, seams and exposed edges. If photographs cannot confirm stability, the disposition should remain open until the required physical assessment is completed.

Repairs are not automatically unacceptable. Their suitability depends on the granite, treatment quality, visibility, position and application. The order should state whether resin, mesh, filled areas or other reinforcement must be disclosed before approval.

Calculate Usable Yield, Not Only Gross Slab Size

Gross length and width do not always equal fabricatable area. Perimeter damage, irregular block edges, concentrated visual features or a condition near a critical cut-out can reduce yield. Buyers purchasing slabs for defined components should compare the cutting map with each selected face.

Inspect Polished, Honed, Leathered and Textured Finishes Differently

Each surface reveals different workmanship issues. Polished granite should be viewed for consistent reflection, dull bands, polishing waves and scratches. Honed granite should have an even low-sheen appearance without unexpected glossy patches. Leathered surfaces require review of texture distribution and cleaning behavior around deeper areas. Flamed or other textured surfaces should be assessed for uniform processing, loose areas and suitability for the specified use.

  • Approve the finish on the actual granite whenever possible.
  • Use stable lighting and consistent viewing angles across the lot.
  • Compare adjacent slabs or pieces together, not only one at a time.
  • Define whether surface evaluation is visual, instrument-based or both.
  • Test required performance separately; a finish name is not a test result.
  • Confirm that repaired areas do not create unacceptable sheen or texture changes.
A surface sample should carry the granite name, finish, lot or production reference, approval date and project. Unidentified samples are difficult to enforce during inspection.

Build a Traceable Pre-Shipment Evidence Package

The inspection record should allow the receiving team to identify what was approved and where it is packed. A collection of unlabeled close-ups is not enough.
