Define the Inspection Scope Before Production
An inspection cannot produce a reliable result when the buyer and supplier use different definitions of acceptable stone. Natural color movement, veins and mineral features vary by material, while cracks, finish defects and dimensional errors require separate evaluation. The order documents should establish the approved range before slabs are processed or packed.

Inspect the Full Slab, Not Only Close-Up Details
Close-ups are useful for repairs and finish defects, but they do not show overall color distribution, vein direction or lot consistency. Each selected slab should have a readable identification number and a full-face image that allows the buyer to compare adjacent slabs.
Strong vein contrast requires full-face review before layout and fabrication approval.
Expressive natural movement should be assessed across the complete production lot.
Granite inspection should compare grain, mineral distribution, finish and edge condition.
For project selection, compare the available marble slab range and granite slab range before confirming a visual acceptance standard. Highly expressive materials may need numbered slab layouts, while more uniform materials still require lot-level shade review.
Separate Natural Features from Production Defects
Terms such as fissure, crack, pit, resin fill and patch should be defined before inspection. A natural fissure may follow the stone's mineral structure without creating the same risk as an open crack, but photographs alone may not confirm stability. The inspector should identify the location, visible extent and relation to edges, corners and planned cut-outs.
Repairs are not automatically acceptable or unacceptable. Their suitability depends on visibility, workmanship, location and the finished use. A repaired area outside a cutting zone may be handled differently from one crossing a narrow bridge around a sink or an exposed edge.
The buyer, supplier and fabricator should agree on whether affected slabs will be accepted, reassigned to another component, reworked or replaced. The decision should reference slab numbers so the packing list remains accurate.
Measure Dimensions and Finish with a Defined Method
Dimensional checks need a stated unit, suitable measuring equipment, agreed reading locations and a sampling rule. Record actual readings rather than writing only "pass." The same principle applies to surface finish: define whether approval is based on an approved sample, visual range, gloss readings or another project-specific method.

Inspection evidence loses value when accepted slabs cannot be matched to the shipment. Slab numbers, bundle numbers, item codes and shipping marks should remain consistent across photographs, inspection records and the final packing list.
For bookmatching or sequential layouts, slab order must also be preserved. The buyer should receive a numbered sequence that can be followed by the fabricator without rebuilding the layout from unmarked images.
Check Packing Before the Container Is Closed
Packing inspection should happen while supports, separators and labels are still visible. After the container is closed, photographs cannot confirm how individual slabs were separated or restrained.
- Confirm that the packing method matches the slab size, thickness and material condition.
- Check contact surfaces, separators and exposed edges for abrasion or impact risk.
- Verify that frames or crates are sound and suitable for the planned handling route.
- Confirm bundle labels, item codes, destination marks and quantity.
- Record loading sequence and restraint before container closure.
- Ensure the consignee has the actual packing and weight information needed for unloading.
